Many of us have dreamed of that big day, when we can afford all of our favourite things and satisfying cravings doesn’t come with regret.

Everyone wants to be financially independent, regardless of what the definition means for each of us. For some, it’s buying their favourite meals without stressing; for others it’s retiring early, and maybe it’s N2 billion in your account?
A small minority of us know how to actually get there. We’ve heard genuinely helpful but often disconnected advice like buy index stocks, or stop spending on fast food.
But can you achieve financial independence, and what should that even look like for a working person in 2026?
What is Financial Independence?
Financial independence means having enough money to cover your needs and wants without stress.
Here’s Investopedia’s definition of Financial Freedom.

The good thing about financial freedom is that it’s tailored to your lifestyle. So one person may need ₦100 million to be financially free, while another person may need just ₦25 million.
Dr Emeka Ucheaga, Head of Strategy, Research and Financial Inclusion at Credit Direct, says: “Wealth is not a number. It is having excess beyond what you need.”
This implies that the first step to becoming financially independent is to understand what your current needs are and create a plan to build enough wealth to cover them.
Becoming Financially Independent
Financial Freedom requires discipline. Not in the sense of not spending on Greek yoghurt and turkey, but discipline to set goals, create plans, and stick to them. Without it, you can’t become financially free.
The next step is to create your financial plan. This should contain:
- Your financial goals: Monetary milestones you want to hit within a defined timeline. For example, you could set a goal to have invested a million Naira before the end of 2026.
- A well-structured budget: A budget tells you not only how much to spend, but when. Pair it with your financial goals, and you know why you’re saving and investing as much as you do.
Everything else you do in your financial journey comes from creating a financial plan and building the discipline to follow through.

The Place of Investing
This is the part most people are eager to hear. In fact, high-paying investments are one of the most searched topics on Google.
Most people look for 100x investment returns because returns from regular investments seem tiny compared to what they put in. They can’t wait a year to earn approximately ₦21,000 on a ₦100,000 investment.
However, if that same return applied to a ₦100 million investment, it would then make a lot more sense.
This means that while you should start investing where you are, your financial freedom goals become possible only when you also take meaningful steps to increase your income.
Dr Emeka also notes: “… earning more only makes you richer when you spend less and invest more.” So your investments and your income should grow side by side.
The best place to start investing is on Yield. You can earn up to 21% p.a. with Yield, so your money works toward your financial independence as hard as you do.
